WEChat Mobile Instant Messenger

When you heard Tencent, I believe many of you never heard this word. But try to ask Chinese people, you will surprise that they will more remember QQ ID than their own Social ID number.

Yes, QQ is one of the famous product from Tencent. Tencent is the biggest internet company in China, biggest number 3 in the world, after Google and Amazon. QQ is just one of more than 1000 other products. All of Tencent's products are mobile apps and internet related. From mail until messenger, from Social networking until online games.

One of their product that I will explore now is not QQ, but WeChat. What the different between QQ and WeChat? QQ is instant messenger which it running on PC based (Mac and Windows), otherwise WeChat is running in Mobile platform (Smartphone). QQ ID can used on WeChat.

The other similar product is called Qute. Qute is almost the same with WeChat but can run in all mobile platforms, from the feature phone (found in many cheap China Phone) to Smartphone (Symbian, Blackberry, Android, iOS). But since Qute can installed (by injected by the phone factory), the feature of Qute is not complete as WeChat. Some WeChat features are not available on Qute.

Like I have mention above, WeChat is the mobile instant messenger for Smartphone. Now is available for Android, iOs and Blackberry, also Symbian as well. The competitors for WeChat is Whatsapp, Line, KakaoTalk and other similar instant messengers.

Based on their product page at Google Play, the features of WeChat are
  • Free cross-platform individual and group messaging with text, voice notes, images, videos, location data, and more.
  • Free HD video calls.
  • Secure, locally stored message histories always accessible offline.
  • NO ADS ANYWHERE!
  • Private, group-based photo-sharing social network.
  • Incredibly easy friend adding by shaking your phones together, scanning QR codes, syncing with your phone contacts, sharing IDs, or using location-based services.
  • Blazingly fast registration with your phone number.
  • Web WeChat: chat on WeChat from your PC through the browser. See http://web.wechatapp.com for details.
  • Support for 18 languages including English, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Portuguese.

And also, they open and share the API Platform, to allow the third party to share their content through chat or the Moments.

From my personal experiences using some mobile instant messengers, WeChat has some pros comparing with the other similar instant messengers
  • Fast. I never use any other instant messenger as fast as WeChat.
  • Sending voice is like PTT or Walkie Talkie way, just press the button, speak, then will send automatically
  • Can use with QQ ID, also has web version
  • Can register with many way, including phone number, QQ ID, email address, etc
  • Has Drift Bottle feature for find a friend. We can add a letter or voice, and put on the virtual bottle, then throw the bottle into "ocean" and hoping someone will find our bottle, as well as we can pick the other bottle.
  • Has a backup and restore contact to the cloud, so when you change the device, you don't need to worry for losing your contacts
